It\u2019s the same with print management in the cloud. Unexplained jargon doesn\u2019t help to fight against describing the \u201ccloud\u201d as this mystical floating field of data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re looking into migrating from on-premise printing to cloud-based print management (either public, private, or hybrid, which we\u2019ll get to soon), you\u2019ve come across this knot of terminology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So,today we\u2019re looking at the three different types of \u201cX-as-a-Service\u201d in the cloud and how they relate to print management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the three types of (Anything-as-a-Service) in the cloud?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. IaaS \u2013 Infrastructure as a Service&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. PaaS \u2013 Platform as a Service<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. SaaS \u2013 Software as a Service<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In effect, each one of these can be thought of as a different layer of an abstraction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IaaS is putting the hardware in the cloud; you maintain full control of the operating system (e.g. Windows or Linux), how it\u2019s configured, and the applications that run on top.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PaaS in the cloud offers more than just hardware, it\u2019s hosting higher-level components in the cloud such as a hosted database.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SaaS usually builds on top of PaaS to build an end-to-end solution ready to use, like Office365 or GSuite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick cheat sheet of each XaaS:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>IaaS = infrastructure in the cloud<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PaaS = infrastructure for development in the cloud<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SaaS = software in the cloud<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does XaaS relate to print management in the cloud?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>IaaS \u2013 Infrastructure as a Service&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>IaaS was really one of the first areas of cloud computing adopted by many companies. Today a good example is moving existing servers into Azure, Amazon Web Services, or Google Cloud Platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advantages mean you can run the same applications and options without worrying about the underlying infrastructure, such as the hardware, the power supply, the raid controller, and so forth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last decade, more and more of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.papercut.com\/products\/mf\/\">PaperCut MF<\/a> customers have been moving their instances into IaaS environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IaaS will continue to be a logical and popular first step for many organizations on the path to print management in the cloud.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pros<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Not having to worry about hardware infrastructure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Still have full control such as hosting maintenance, downtime periods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Virtualization and scalability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Value add services for backup\/restore<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.papercut.com\/kb\/Main\/HighAvailability\">High Availability<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cons&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A high-speed connection (good data center connectivity) is a must to achieve high performance and continuity of service&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Control comes at a cost of some complexity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>PaaS \u2013 Platform as a Service&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>PaaS relates to hybrid cloud (more on that coming soon). PaaS makes sure print management software is able to use and integrate with components that exist in the cloud. It could be as simple as working with Azure Active Directory or scanning to Google Workspace or using a database that\u2019s hosted in the cloud. The infrastructure these systems sit on is 100% opaque (like knowing the brand of RAM on your laptop).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SaaS solutions are fully managed for you.
